What is multi-factor authentication (MFA)?

Updated today

Multi-factor authentication - also known as MFA or two-factor authentication (2FA) - is a way of making sure it's really you logging in. It requires you to prove your identity in more than one way before you can access your account.

Think of it like a bank vault that needs both a key and a combination code. Even if someone steals your password, they still can't get into your account without the second step.

Why use MFA?

More than 15 billion stolen emails and passwords are already available to cybercriminals from 100,000 existing data breaches. People often use the same password across multiple websites so there is a risk cybercriminals could potentially gain access to accounts with information already available. Additionally there is a rising number of ways (such as malware and scams) where passwords are stolen, sometimes without the knowledge of the victim.

The use of MFA adds an extra layer of safety which keeps client data safe and secure even when passwords find their way into the wrong hands.

At Noted, we take the security of your data very seriously, and that is why we have made MFA a mandatory requirement for all our users.

The three factors of authentication

Authentication is based on three types of proof:

  • Something you know e.g. a password or PIN

  • Something you have e.g. your phone or a code generator

  • Something you are e.g. a fingerprint or face scan

MFA combines at least two of these. Noted users use the first two - a password plus a code on your phone, to protect yourself and your client data online.

Which authentication app should I use?

We recommend a free authenticator app on your smartphone. The two most popular are Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator - both are free and do the same job. Simple rule of thumb: if you're already using Google, go with Google. If you're on Microsoft, go with Microsoft. Either way, you won't go wrong.

How to install the app

On an iPhone: Open the App Store, search for your chosen app, tap Get, and then Open once downloaded.

On an Android phone: Open the Google Play Store, search for your chosen app, tap Install, and then Open once downloaded.
